Can aluminum hypophosphite flame retard PE?

Aluminum hypophosphite has a good flame retardant effect in polyolefin, such as polypropylene PP (generally up to V-2 flame retardant grade), and also has a good halogen-free flame retardant effect in TPE, TPU. But the same polyolefin, aluminum hypophosphite in polyethylene PE can be flame retardant? How is its formula? What is the flame retardant effect? According to our experience and a number of different formulations data show that aluminum hypophosphite can not flame retardant polyethylene PE, from the current research and use of the industry, polyethylene PE effective flame retardant or brominated flame retardant and antimony trioxide Sb2O3 compounded flame retardant masterbatch or flame retardant is the main. The price of antimony trioxide Sb2O3 may not be able to decrease significantly in the long term, and the development of effective antimony trioxide substitutes may be an opportunity for the flame retardant industry.

1, separate flame retardant test

add 15-30% of inorganic aluminum hypophosphite, combustion test flame retardant failure, increase the anti-dripping agent, flame retardant also can not reach V-0. At the same time on the mechanical and physical properties of PE has a great adverse effect.

2, compounding flame retardant test

and MCA, ammonium polyphosphate, MPP flame retardant, aluminum hydroxide, etc. According to different ratios of compounding, adding 25-35%, with some flame retardant effect, but can not reach UL 94 V-0, add flame retardant polyethylene PE in the impact, toughness, strength and other indicators of a substantial decline. So the above different formulations are basically a failure.

The phosphorus content of aluminum hypophosphite is slightly lower than that of red phosphorus, and simply from the point of view of the active ingredients of phosphorus and nitrogen flame retardants, it should be said that there should be a relatively good flame retardant effect on polyolefins, including PE. However, why can't it reach the ideal flame retardant level either alone or after compounding? This may be related to the physical and chemical properties and physical properties of PE itself, as well as the compatibility and dispersion of PE and aluminum hypophosphite. The effectiveness of flame retardant formula is not only considered from the aspect of flame retardant content, but also from the compatibility between flame retardant and material, the influence on mechanical properties of material and other aspects.
