What are the advantages and disadvantages of tetramethylolphosphine sulfate (THPS)?

tetramethylolphosphine sulfate(THPS) is a green, environmentally friendly, high-quality bactericide and water quality improver. It has important applications in aquaculture, oilfield sterilization, and garbage deodorization. THPS has certain advantages over similar products in terms of bactericidal effect, environmental friendliness, and compatibility. However, THPS has a slightly acidic pH, which can be corrosive to humans and skin. Direct contact with large amounts may cause harm. So, what are the advantages and disadvantages of tetramethylolphosphine sulfate? What are its strengths and weaknesses? We will briefly explain below.

I. Advantages

1. Green and Environmentally Friendly: It is easily biodegradable. According to the "United Nations Coastal Chemicals Notice," it is classified as Category 0 toxicity and can be discharged into seawater in unlimited quantities. After its action, it can be oxidized into low-toxicity trimethylolphosphine oxide, which is easily biodegraded or oxidized into harmless orthophosphates or sulfates. Its residues can also be used as effective fertilizers and nutrients for crops.

2. Broad-spectrum bactericide: tetramethylolphosphine sulfate(THPS) is a broad-spectrum bactericide that kills fungi, bacteria, algae, Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, and molds. It has a particularly strong killing effect on sulfate-reducing bacteria. Its phosphorus-hydroxyl group has a strong micro-charge, which can undergo redox reactions, destroying and inhibiting the cells, proteins, and enzymes of microorganisms, thus achieving a bactericidal and disinfecting effect.

3. Good stability: Under oxygen-free and well-sealed conditions, its shelf life can reach about 3 years. It is generally chemically stable and works well under high pH conditions, making it particularly suitable for ponds with aquatic plants and saline-alkali ponds.

4. Good water quality improvement effect: Tetramethylolsulfate can effectively degrade organic impurities such as uneaten feed and feces at the bottom of the pond, reducing the accumulation of toxic substances such as ammonia nitrogen, nitrite, and hydrogen sulfide, and alleviating the blackening and foul odor of bottom sediment. When used alternately with potassium persulfate compound salt, sodium percarbonate, solid hydrogen peroxide, and hydrogen peroxide, the water quality regulation effect is excellent.

5. Good Compatibility: It does not react with other water treatment agents (scale inhibitors and corrosion inhibitors) in the system. It can be used simultaneously with all negatively charged corrosion inhibitors and scale inhibitors, and can even have a synergistic effect with ionic corrosion inhibitors, simultaneously improving corrosion inhibition, scale inhibition, and bactericidal effects. It can be used in combination with most acidic or neutral bactericides, especially hydroxyl-type bactericides of the same type, which can have a synergistic effect.

II. Disadvantages:

1. Irritant: Tetramethylphosphonic acid sulfate has an acidic pH and is irritating to the skin and eyes. Direct contact with skin is not recommended as it may cause sensitization. Inhalation and ingestion are harmful and may cause serious eye damage.

2. Oxygen Consumption: In aquaculture, if used in large quantities, it can react with oxygen in the water through an oxidation-reduction reaction, consuming active oxygen in the water. Therefore, when using this product, please turn on an aerator or alternate it with chemical oxygenators. Use with caution in hot, humid, and oxygen-deficient water bodies.

In conclusion, as long as we use tetramethylphosphonic acid sulfate rationally, its benefits outweigh its drawbacks. Currently, the application of this product in oil fields and aquaculture is relatively simple. If more compound formulations can be developed to enhance its bactericidal effect, it may have unexpected benefits. Western companies have more experience in this field and are at the forefront of the industry.
